The Wesley High School came into being on 16th October 1926 – 82 years ago. Wesley High School is an all girl’s high school located in the capital city, Roseau. It occupies two buildings: the Hillsborough Street or Chateau building which houses the first and second forms and the Main building on Cross Street where the forms three to five, and the office are located. This premier learning institution for girls began with a population of eight girls, two of whom are still alive: Ms Marjorie Roberts who resides in Dominica and Mrs. Gwennie Robin Cable who lives in the United States. The first principal, Ms Marjorie Errey was the daughter of the Superintendent Minister of the Methodist Church at the time. She later became Mrs. Marjorie Branch and passed away a few years ago in the island of Antigua.
“At it, all at it always at it” was the motto of the school at its beginning and this has since been changed to “Striving for the best”. There are three houses whose names show our Methodist heritage; “Errey”, “Gilbert” and “Barrett” all names of Methodist ministers who made their mark on Methodism and its beginning in the Caribbean. Wesley High School continues to influence the Dominica society and has made an indelible mark especially in the areas of nursing, police service, education, performing arts and religion.
Presently the population of the 2008 – 09 academic year stands at 255 students, with a teaching staff of 18, 1 secretarial staff and an ancillary worker.
There are ten classrooms. The Chateau building has four classrooms with a population of 122 students while the Main building has six classrooms with a population of 133 students. The present curriculum is mainly academic in nature with ten subjects being offered in first to third forms and eight in fourth and fifth. The core subjects at all levels are English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, a Science subject and a foreign Language. Food and Nutrition and Music are the only vocational subjects offered.
Our future goal which we are working hard to achieve very soon is the relocation of our school. We wish to do so, so that our students can have playing facilities, better laboratories and be able to do technical as well as vocational subjects which will better equip them for the Dominica society of the 21st century as well as the global village of which we are a part.
With the efforts of the Methodist Church, the parents and students of the Wesley High School, past students, business concerns and well wishers we can provide our young women with a well rounded, state of the art education of which we can be duly proud. The government is presently looking at giving us a plot of land in exchange for land we possess in the Elmshall area. We are continuing our fund raising drive. We call on you to do your part to help us assist our young women by making your contribution to the relocation of the Wesley High School. We thank you in advance for your assistance and God’s blessings.

Trust me we really need a new one…
Its long overdue. We need to negotiate very rigourously and seriously with the Govt. of Dominica for that land transfer. Its just taking too much time.
I was a former teacher of the WHS from 1978-1979 and 1985-1993 and principal from 1991-1992. And also was the principal of the sister school, the St. Andrew’s High school(St. AHS)from 1993-1995(the St. AHS opened in October 1979 and closed in July 2005). The repalcement school is now the North East Comprehensive whick absorbed the Marigot Secondary and the st. Andrew’s High).
The WHS (1926) is an historic school, being the 3rd high school to be established on the island, after the Convent High School(1853) and the Dominica Grammar (1893)School.
We really need a new location and I wish to add that the uniform be changed and the school, the new school should also expand its admission to include boys as well.
well all you there long papa. and i just don’t like that school with a passion!!!!
is true the school there long time but nobody not saying they will give money to build a new school. so i doe see why any of you should talk.. SO GET OVER URSELVES
I do not know what’s there to dislike about a school when you actualy never attended that school. It was a school with very good morals and I enjoyed being there. If I had listened to many people on the outside about the way they spoke about WHS I would not have gone there but I am so happy I did!!!! We had very good teacher/student relationships.
